Safety of Early Discharge for Medicaid Newborns
Article Abstract:
Early discharge after birth appears to be safe even for babies born to low-income mothers. Researchers analyzed re-hospitalization rates among 102,678 babies born to mothers covered by Medicaid in Ohio between 1991 and 1995. During this time, the percentage of babies discharged within one day of a vaginal birth and two days of a cesarean increased from 21% to 60%. However, the rate of re-hospitalization within 7 to 14 days after discharge decreased about 20% over this time period. Premature babies and those with low Apgar scores were most likely to be re-hospitalized.

Trends in Ischemic Heart Disease Death Rates for Blacks and Whites-United States, 1981-1995
Article Abstract:
Blacks between the ages of 35 and 64 have a higher risk of death from ischemic heart disease than whites, according to data from 1981 through 1995. Age-adjusted death rates declined between 1981 and 1995 for blacks and whites of both sexes. The decrease was greater for whites than for blacks, however, leading to an increase in the black-white mortality ratio. Age-specific death rates increase as age increases for blacks and whites of both sexes.
