AIDS settlement offer: a hard choice for hemophiliacs
Article Abstract:
U.S. hemophiliacs who were infected by HIV-tainted blood product have been offered a settlement of about $100,000 each by the drug company defendants. The offer must be accepted by 95% of the 800 people with pending lawsuits against the companies. The companies are accused of knowingly selling AIDS-tainted clotting factors in the early 1980s. The defendants in the cases are Bayer AG; Baxter International Inc.; Rhone-Poulenc Rorer Inc.; and Alpha Therapeutics Inc., a division of Japan's Green Cross.

Cholesterol drugs tied to cancer in rats; link questioned
Article Abstract:
Drugs to lower cholesterol levels in the 'fibric acid' and 'statin' categories have been found to cause cancer in laboratory mice and rats. The drugs were tested by the US Food and Drug Administration for less than 10 years. The drugs are not expected to cause cancer in humans before 20 years. The information was published in the Journal of the American Medical Assn for Jan 3, 1996.
