Update: influenza activity, 1992
Article Abstract:
A moderate number of influenza cases have been reported worldwide during the 1991 to 1992 influenza season. The three types of influenza viruses reported are influenza A(H1N1), influenza A(H3N2) and influenza B. The influenza A(H3N2) virus has caused the largest outbreaks of influenza in Asia, North America, the Pacific Islands and Africa. Influenza A(H1N1) has also been associated with large outbreaks of influenza in several parts of the world, including New Zealand, Asia nad South America. In Europe, the number of cases of influenza decreased during Mar and Apr 1992, and no new cases have been reported since May 1992. A vaccination campaign is usually carried out in the US during Nov of every year. Individuals who should be vaccinated include individuals over 65 years old, nursing home residents and individuals with respiratory and other disorders that may increase their risk of complications. During the 1991-92 influenza season, several outbreaks occurred in the US before the completion of the vaccination campaign.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) report that as of November 30, 5.4% of deaths reported were due to pneumonia and influenza.
