Influenza vaccination and the Guillain-Barre syndrome
Article Abstract:
The risk of developing Guillain-Barre syndrome after influenza vaccination appears to be small. This syndrome is characterized by reversible paralysis. The incidence of the syndrome jumped dramatically in 1976 following the swine flu vaccination program. However, a 1998 study of the 1992-1993 and 1993-1994 influenza vaccination programs revealed only one or two cases for every one million people vaccinated. A strong link between Campylobacter jejuni infection and Guillain-Barre syndrome indicates that this bacterium may have proteins similar to proteins in nerves. Thus, the immune attack on the bacterium also damages nerves.
