President's address
Article Abstract:
In accepting the office of president of the American Dental Association, Dr. Overbey reviewed the importance of the association in promoting the interests of the profession. Many programs exist for the support of dentists and dentistry. Even before the concern about dentists contracting AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) from patients, the association was involved in infection control and reducing the risks of hepatitis. The association has developed programs for helping those with chemical dependencies, and it has organized support groups for litigation stress. The auxiliary provides an opportunity for spouses to become involved in many areas, including the most important of all, public awareness. But all of these programs require support and participation from the membership and it is certainly no time for members to leave the association, or for professionals to fail to join. Each dentist should be actively campaigning to interest his colleagues in joining the association and supporting its goals. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)
