Article Abstract:
Japanese society and law lag behind the rest of world on issues such as patient self-determination of care, and living wills are not legally protected. Family members' wishes often override the patient's, vetoing organ donation even when the patient had enrolled in an organ donor program.

A Japanese cancer researcher questions the prevailing practice of lengthy hospital stays for elderly patients, which uses resources that might be better used in society. The practice is perpetuated by a government reimbursement system favoring tests, prescriptions and treatments.

Breaking down the barriers to health information

International health agencies must not only act as leaders in providing health information but must also serve as partners and coordinators with other organizations. A well-defined framework is needed to meet the information need of health workers.
