Inspector general: can PROs effectively teach and police?
Article Abstract:
The Health and Human Services inspector general has issued a report questioning whether peer review organizations (PRO) can affectively identify problematic doctors. Over the years the focus of PROs has shifted from identifying problems with individuals to analyzing practice patterns and other broad trends. State licensing boards may be asked to take responsibility for enforcing practice standards among physicians. Legislation may also be enacted to provide information-sharing between state boards and PROs. Medicare beneficiaries are particularly concerned about the status of PROs.
