The longitudinal effectiveness of implant-supported overdentures
Article Abstract:
Implant-supported overdentures appear to be successful in toothless dental patients who are unable to wear dentures. Researchers placed 132 dental implants in the jaws of 45 toothless patients who were unable to wear dentures comfortably. During a follow-up period of three to 13 years, researchers evaluated the implants and monitored changes in the surrounding bone and soft tissues. All of the patients who kept their follow-up appointments were able to wear their implant-supported overdenture prostheses. In this group, 105 of the original 132 implants were functional and continued to provide support and stability for the overdenture. Bone changes around the implant site were .2 millimeters per year or less. Some patients had gum inflammation around the implant that was treated. The appearance, function, and speech aspects of the overdentures were excellent according to the patients.

A prospective study of the effectiveness of implant-supported fixed prostheses
Article Abstract:
Implant-supported fixed prostheses appear to be an effective treatment for dental patients who are unable to wear dentures comfortably. Researchers placed 259 dental implants in the jaws of 45 toothless patients who were unable to wear dentures. During a follow-up period of 11 to 15.5 years, researchers evaluated the implants and monitored changes in the surrounding bone and soft tissues. Forty-four patients had favorable treatment outcomes. Implants failed in one patient. Bone loss around functioning implants was minimal. Periodontal health was not related to the long-term success of dental implants. All patients were pleased with the appearance of their prosthesis and said that the treatment had improved their quality of life. Each reported increased comfort and an improved ability to chew many foods.

Abutment tooth loss in patients with overdentures
Article Abstract:
The incidence and causes of tooth loss in a prospective cohort study of subjects wearing overdentures were identified. It is suggested that if a dentist recommends overdenture therapy, the patient needs to be examined regularly to reduce the risk of experiencing caries and periodontal disease.
