Intra-ocular melanoma
Article Abstract:
Inter-ocular melanoma occurs in the uveal tract and sufferers are usually fair skinned caucasians over 50 years of age. One-third of patients have no symptoms when cancer is diagnosed, while others have blurred vision. It is not painful unless the tumour is large. Diagnosis is made using binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy and ultrasonography. This shows the size and position of the tumour. Thin tumours are treated by plaque radiotherapy, thicker ones need trans-scleral resection followed by plaque radiotherapy and endoresection is used if a tumour is close to the optic disc.
