Correlation of expression of H/Ley/Leb antigens with survival in patients with carcinoma of the lung
Article Abstract:
Lung cancer patients whose tumors do not have H/Ley/Leb antigens on their surface may survive significantly longer than those whose tumors have H/Ley/Leb antigens. Tumors with H/Ley/Leb antigens stain positive with migration-inhibitory antibody (MIA), while those without these antigens stain negative. Of 149 lung cancer patients, 91 had MIA-positive tumors, and 58 had MIA-negative tumors. Five year survival was significantly lower among those with MIA-positive tumors, compared to those with MIA-negative tumors. Five years after diagnosis, 20.9% of those with MIA-positive tumors were alive, compared with 58.6% of those with MIA-negative tumors. Of the 67 patients with squamous cell lung cancer, 10.5% of those with MIA-positive tumors were alive after five years, compared with 62.1% of those with MIA-negative tumors. H/Ley/Leb antigens may be associated with changes in blood group antigens that sometimes occur in cancer patients.

The use of molecular methods in infectious diseases
Article Abstract:
Molecular biology techniques can be used to identify different strains of microorganisms responsible for infectious diseases outbreaks. These methods can also be used to diagnose patients suffering from different infectious diseases. Plasmid profile analysis is a technique used to examine plasmids, or small circular pieces of genetic material in the cytoplasm of bacterial cells. Plasmids can serve as identifying markers for different strains of disease-causing bacteria. Genomic fingerprinting can be used to study bacteria, viruses and protozoa that do not have plasmids. Southern hybridization fingerprinting is used to examine fragments of DNA, or genetic material. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification is a technique used to study small amounts of viral or bacterial DNA that may be present in tissue samples.
