Is insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus environmentally induced?
Article Abstract:
Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) may be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Researchers have found several genes that may increase an individual's susceptibility to IDDM. These genes affect cells of the immune system. Proteins found in cow's milk may be an environmental factor that contributes to the cause of IDDM. Increased consumption of cow's milk may be partially responsible for the increase in IDDM throughout the world. A research study found that individuals newly diagnosed with IDDM had antibodies in their blood against bovine serum albumin, a protein found in cow's milk. These antibodies reacted with a specific portion of bovine serum albumin, which has a structure similar to a protein associated with pancreatic beta cells. Patients lost these antigens within a certain amount of time after diagnosis, indicating a parallel loss of beta cells, which produce insulin.

Infant diets and type 1 diabetes: too early, too late, or just too complicated?
Article Abstract:
It may be too soon to recommend specific dietary changes for babies to prevent type 1, or juvenile onset, diabetes. Two studies published in 2003 found that cereal given to babies at specific ages may predispose them to type 1 diabetes. More research is needed to determine whether this and other dietary factors may be involved in juvenile diabetes.
