Is office use of vaginal ultrasonography feasible?
Article Abstract:
Ultrasonography is a diagnostic imaging tool that uses high frequency sound to visualize internal structures. Abdominal ultrasound, where the transducer is placed directly on the abdomen, is a standard of practice in obstetrical and gynecological medicine. Vaginal ultrasound produces images of the pelvic structures by emitting high frequency sound through a probe inserted into the vagina. New scanning technology allows vaginal probes to produce crisp high-resolution images. Although there are many advantages to vaginal probe ultrasonography, its use during routine pelvic examinations has so far been limited. The results of a vaginal ultrasound can resolve questionable findings commonly encountered during a routine pelvic exam. The results are fast, accurate and easily performed. It is particularly useful in obese or guarded patients who are difficult to examine. Formal training programs should be integrated into first-year residency programs to assure diagnostic expertise and future office use feasibility. Comparison of the growth and hydrogen peroxide production by vaginal probiotic lactobacilli under different culture conditions
Article Abstract:
Researchers report the optimal growth conditions for two different lactobacilli, Lactobacillus paracasei CRL 1289 and Lactobacillus crispatus CRL 1266. They also show that the lactic acid produced by these bacteria inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. They hope to develop a pill containing these bacteria that women can take to maintain a healthy vaginal tract.
