Job satisfaction and morale of nurses in NHS trusts
Article Abstract:
Many community nurses employed by National Health Service trusts feel increasingly concerned over uncertainty in their working environment following the introduction of reforms in April 1991, according to a three-year study of nurses working for four different trusts. Nurses remained committed to personal care delivery, however, and their suspicion of the reforms apparently fell during the course of the study. District nurses are particularly concerned about the growing volume of paperwork which is increasing their workload to an unsatisfactory level.

Nursing makes you sick
Article Abstract:
A survey by Unison found that one in three nursing staff work unpaid for one shift per month and many more come in to work even if they are ill despite being overworked in a stressful environment. However, the government plans to reduce absenteeism by 30% by introducing penalties and rewards. Unison wants to concentrate on improving morale and finding out what is causing staff to be sick. It is likely to be poor working conditions, stress, a heavy workload and low pay. The solution proposed by Unison is better equipment, pay and more staff.

Nursing morale during trust transition
Article Abstract:
A survey of nurse morale during transition of a large district general hospital to NHS trust status, revealed that only 11% of respondents felt needed by management and a sense of belonging, while a further 11% felt appreciated. Some 93% planned to continue in the profession, although 11% said that they had lost interest in nursing. Around 98% felt they had difficulties communicating with medical staff.
