Patients with symptoms like chestpain, infertility, abnormal hair growth, and overweight was advised to lose weight by dieting and exercising. However, further diagnoses showed that these patients have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCO), which when can improve the patient's health and getting her blood sugar and blood pressure levels under control.

The social history of most groups includes a time when women are heavy and maternal. Almost all US minority groups are in this mode even as white women seek thinness, reflecting that each group is at a different place in their social history. Obesity leads to disease, but Black women have a more balanced notion of thinness.

People who are overweight are more likely than thinner people to become ill, partly because their diets are unhealthy. Overweight people should avoid severe low-calorie diets because they can hurt the immune system. Vitamin E, vitamin C, and the B vitamins may benefit the immune system.
