Cuba stays out of US war on cocaine trade
Article Abstract:
Washington officials cannot prove Cuba has any connection with the drug trade although 2,880 pounds of cocaine was seized in January 1992 in the Bahamas after air-drops were tracked. Once planes get over the Air Defence Identification Zone into Cuban airspace, US planes have to stop tracking them. Some Cuban defectors have alleged drug trafficking was sanctioned by Fidel Castro to obtain foreign currency. The Command, Control, Communications and Intelligence (C31) installation near Homestead, Florida monitors suspicious air traffic. Thirty-nine suspected incidents have been noted in 1991 and 1992. Cuban cooperation would be hindered by slow communications and fuel shortages.
