Rosiglitazone for type 2 diabetes mellitus
Article Abstract:
The FDA has approved the drug rosiglitazone for the treatment of type 2, or adult onset, diabetes. Sold under the trade name Avandia, it can be used alone or in combination with metformin. It decreases resistance to insulin and appears to be as effective as troglitazone. Side effects include moderate weight gain, swelling and mild anemia, but it does not damage the liver like some other drugs in this class. Its long-term safety is not known.
