Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus: a sexually transmissible infection?
Article Abstract:
The virus that is believed to cause Kaposi's sarcoma may be sexually transmissible. Researchers tested 130 gay men with AIDS for this virus, which is called human herpesvirus 8 or Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV). Half of the men tested positive for KSHV. These men had more casual sexual partners and were more likely to engage in risky sexual acts. Half of the KSHV-positive men developed Kaposi's sarcoma compared to only 12% of the KSHV-negative men.

Trends in incidence of AIDS illnesses in Australia from 1983 to 1994: The Australian AIDS Cohort
Article Abstract:
AIDS in Australia almost exclusively affects males through homosexual contact. From 1983-1994, the risks of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia and Kaposi's sarcoma declined, but cytomegalovirus disease, Mycobacterium avium complex, and esophageal yeast infections became greater risks as the opportunistic infections associated with HIV.
