Know how: vacuum-assisted closure (VAC)
Article Abstract:
The VAC system of wound closure applies negative pressure uniformly to a wound which allows the arterioles to dilate, increasing effective local circulation, which helps in the proliferation of granulation tissue. Excess fluid is also removed, which reduces oedema and research also shows that bacterial colonisation of a wound is reduced after four days of treatment. The procedure is simple and only a small number of dressing changes are required.
