Assessing oral cancer knowledge among dental students in South Carolina
Article Abstract:
Survey results on Medical University of South Carolina's dental student's knowledge level about oral cancer symptoms, diagnosis, risk and non-risk factors are presented. Findings show that 95 percent students are aware of oral cancer risk factors. However, 20 to 40 percent students are unaware of non-risk factors, possible areas of cancer location, and diagnostic examination factors. Key observation is the relation between academic year and knowledge level.

Knowledge, opinions and practices of general dentists regarding oral cancer: a pilot survey
Article Abstract:
Many dentists are not as knowledgable about oral cancer as they believe they are. A survey of 243 dentists found that many were not entirely knowledgable about oral cancer despite the fact that 75% believed their knowledge was current. Most knew that older patients have a higher risk of oral cancer, but 30% did not provide an oral cancer exam to this age group. Only 71% ask about tobacco use and only 36% ask about alcohol use. These are both risk factors for oral cancer, which strikes 30,000 American each year and causes 8,000 deaths annually.
