Laboratory test differences associated with HTLV-I and HTLV-II infection
Article Abstract:
Infection with human T-cell leukemia viruses (HTLV) may cause an increase in the lymphocyte count and changes on blood tests. HTLV causes adult T-cell leukemia, autoimmune conditions, and a neurologic syndrome. Researchers performed blood tests on 539 blood donors with HTLV infection and 795 HTLV-negative blood donors. Absolute lymphocyte counts were 6% higher in HTLV-I-positive donors and 10% higher in HTLV-II-positive donors. HTLV-infected donors had more platelets in the blood, and HTLV-II-infected donors had lower calcium and creatine kinase levels in their blood.

Altered cell-mediated immunity in asymptomatic Colombian natives with positive or indeterminate serology for HTLV-I
Article Abstract:
The immune response appears to be altered in people with HTLV-I infection even if they have no symptoms. Researchers tested cell-mediated immunity in 40 HTLV-I-infected asymptomatic Colombian Indians and 30 healthy Indians with skin testing using seven different antigens. HTLV-I-infected Indians had fewer positive reactions than the healthy Indians.
