Sex assignment in the neonate with intersex or inadequate genitalia
Article Abstract:
Children born with ambiguous genitalia present significant challenges to physicians and parents. Genetic or hormonal abnormalities can produce children whose genitals do not reflect their chromosomal makeup, and may require surgical reassignment. A psychiatrist reports his experiences with such cases, and finds that many reassignments produce discomfort in parents and behavioral challenges in the children. A psychiatrist experienced in intersex children should participate in decision-making. Gender ambiguity is not an emergency, and all parties need time for expert consultation.

Management of infants of diabetic mothers
Article Abstract:
Children born to mothers with diabetes run a higher risk of sickness, but this risk can be lessened with modern management and neonatal intensive care units (NICU). There is a risk of premature delivery from women with either gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) or preexisting insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). This increases the rate of respiratory distress syndrome. Children of women with IDDM have a higher risk of hypoglycemia, but this may be easily treated. Special care nurseries should be set up, as time in NICU prevents the start of breast feeding.
