Lactic acidosis traced to thiamine deficiency related to nationwide shortage of multivitamins for total parenteral nutrition - United States, 1997
Article Abstract:
Patients with a feeding tube may be at risk for thiamine deficiency. Three cases describe how a patient receiving total parenteral nutrition (TPN) that is not supplemented with multivitamins can develop lactic acidosis. This condition is characterized by an excess of lactic acid in the blood, which can have serious consequences. In Nov, 1996, one of the suppliers of multivitamin supplements for TPN solutions discontinued production. One of the remaining two suppliers also had production difficulties. Guidelines for treating patients on TPN during the shortage are included.

Lead in Calcium Supplements: Cause for Alarm or Celebration?
Article Abstract:
Some calcium supplements contain small amounts of lead but consumers should not be concerned. The lead content of calcium supplements is much lower than it used to be and calcium actually prevents lead from being absorbed by the body. Adequate dietary calcium might actually prevent lead poisoning even if the supplements themselves contain lead.
