Amniotic fluid cytokines (interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-1beta, and interleukin-8) and the risk for the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia
Article Abstract:
The presence of certain cytokines in the womb may increase a fetus' risk of developing bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Levels of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1beta), IL-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) were analyzed in amniotic fluid samples obtained within five days of 69 premature births. All of these cytokine levels were higher among the 13 infants born with bronchopulmonary dysplasia compared to those born without this lung disease even after controlling for gestational age. Infants born with bronchopulmonary dysplasia were born earlier and weighed less.
