Law may force 4,000 doctors to curtail office labs
Article Abstract:
New federal regulations governing medical laboratories will cost clinical labs $409 million dollars during the first year alone, according to a report by the American Medical Association. Once the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 are implemented, physicians with in-office clinics will pay 95% of all regulatory costs because they were not regulated previously. The greatest expense will occur in the areas of quality control and proficiency testing, forcing physicians to increase fees for lab tests by as much as 8%.

AMA makes last suggestions on 'final' office lab rules
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association (AMA) responded to the Health Care Financing Administration's (HCFA) call for comments on the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 with an 11-page document asking the HCFA to provide physicians with more information. The regulations establish guidelines for operating moderately and highly complex in-office laboratories. The AMA recommended establishing regional information centers. It also requested clarification of the evaluation process.

Doctors hit with another lab form
Article Abstract:
The AMA has expressed displeasure over the US Health Care Financing Administration's (HCFA) 16-page questionnaire concerning clinical laboratories. The HCFA representatives say the information is needed to judge compliance with the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988. The completed forms will assist HCFA in issuing registration certificates and billing for inspection. Inspection for accreditation may be performed by a nongovernmental agency if preferred.
