Leading players
Article Abstract:
Four UK hospitals were given the opportunity to participate in a pilot leadership training course for ward leaders run by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) in 1994. The aim of the three-year course was to improve care standards by building management and team relationship skills of ward leaders. Skills were learnt through a mixture of theory and practice, with workshops built into the course. A survey of staff working with the newly trained leaders claims that 63% believe the course has had an effect on their leadership and management. Patients are also expressing their approval.

Coming of age
Article Abstract:
The UKCC's Rule 18(2), which defines the competencies of second-level nurses on qualification, should be dropped, according to most enrolled nurses (ENs). They believe that it hampers their career development, as the competencies which it lays down are often seen as describing the limits of their capabilities. They feel that their experience should be acknowledged and that access to training courses should be improved.

Disappearing act
Article Abstract:
The British Dept of Health has spent over 500 million pounds sterling on introducing Project 2000. However, much of the money has been given to NHS trusts to finance staff replacements. There is a fear that some of the money may have been spent on other matters by hard-up trusts. The appointment of nurses should have increased while it has actually decreased.
