Lecturing in higher education: a career for self-starters
Article Abstract:
Nurses who want to become educators have a number of options open to them, but ill-defined career paths mean that nurses have to make their own opportunities. Universities and institutes of higher education in the UK are currently training 36,000 student nurses and prospective nurse educators should spend time researching the different educational establishments. The universities frequently offer opportunities for nurses who want to combine research with teaching, whilst nurses can often combine lecturing with continuing clinical practice at institutes of higher education.

Working in the community
Article Abstract:
It is becoming increasingly common in the UK for nurses to work in a community setting. However, community nurses often find it very difficult to obtain sponsorship for specialist practitioner programmes. Most specialist practitioners working in the community must be willing to deal with a wide range of people and situations, and need to have excellent assessment and decision-making skills. It is best for nurses who move into the community setting to have a wide range of experience in hospital-based nursing.

Bowel management and consent
Article Abstract:
A number of high profile cases have resulted in the re-evaluation of good practice in bowel management. Nurses are advised that patient consent should always be obtained prior to any intervention, ensuring that the patient has the mental ability to give consent; that the patient is sufficiently well-informed to make an informed choice; and that the patient gives his/her consent freely.
