Leiomyoma of the female urethra and bladder: report of twenty-three patients and review of the literature
Article Abstract:
Fibroid tumors of the female urethra and bladder that do not produce symptoms may not require surgery. Researchers reviewed 23 case histories of this rare, noncancerous tumor. More than half of women had no symptoms, and in 10 cases, the tumor was discovered during surgery for other reasons. One patient developed an opening between the vagina and the bladder after tumor removal. Therefore, removing the tumor is not recommended unless it produces symptoms, obstructs urine flow, or hangs by a neck, which increases the risk of producing symptoms and makes removal easy. However, tumors should be followed up.

Thirty-five percent had already been diagnosed with uterine fibroids and 51% were found to have uterine fibroids during an ultrasound scan. African-American women were more likely to have uterine fibroids than white women.
