Leisure activities and the risk of dementia in the elderly
Article Abstract:
Leisure activities that involve intellectual function such as reading and playing board games may reduce an elderly person's risk of dementia. This was the conclusion of a study of 469 people older than 75 who did not have dementia and were followed for an average of five years. Other research has shown that greater educational levels may also reduce the risk of dementia.

Use it or lose it -- do effortful mental activities protect against dementia?
Article Abstract:
It is not clear whether mental effort can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. Several studies have suggested that this might be true, but the exact mechanism for this effect is unknown. It is possible that mental effort may cause the brain to form new nerve cells and connections that could bypass the abnormal changes that produce dementia.

Drug treatment of anxiety disorders in children
Article Abstract:
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) may benefit children with anxiety disorders who do not respond to cognitive behavioral therapy or psychotherapy. However, cognitive behavioral therapy should be used first, since it is as effective as drug treatment and has no side effects.
