Length of stay in home care before and after the 1997 Balanced Budget Act
Article Abstract:
Many elderly patients are receiving fewer home care services since the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 was implemented, especially if they receive services from a for-profit home health care agency. This was the conclusion of a study of 4,127 patients enrolled in a home health care plan in 1996 and 4,051 similar patients in 1998. The Balanced Budget Act reduced payments for home health care services as a way of reducing Medicare spending.

Hospice use among Medicare managed care and fee-for-service patients dying with cancer
Article Abstract:
Cancer patients who are in a Medicare managed care program are more likely to use hospice care and to stay in hospice care longer than those covered by Medicare fee-for-service. This was the conclusion of a study of 260,090 Medicare patients. This shows that managed care plans may be more likely to encourage patients to enroll in hospice programs.
