Liability lottery a costly bad habit
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Assn recommends reform of professional liability and an alternative system of dispute resolution to avoid further increases in the cost of medical care. Defensive medicine cost the US $15.1 billion in 1989. Much of this expense of unnecessary procedures can be avoided by guidelines for appropriate care. Tort system expenses, which added up to $132 billion in 1991, may increase to $300 billion by the year 2000 unless measures for fairness and efficiency are adopted.

MD-owned liability firms face competition
Article Abstract:
The current state of the physicians' liability insurance market is analyzed, comparing the policies available from physician-owned companies and/or independent insurance companies.
