Life-threatening Cache Valley virus infection
Article Abstract:
A 28-year-old man was admitted to a hospital with a flu-like illness. He had been exposed to a dead mouse and had been bitten by mosquitoes during a hunting trip. His condition worsened despite antibiotic and antiviral treatment and he eventually died. Blood and urine samples had consistently tested negative for bacteria and several viruses. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention isolated a virus from his blood samples called the Cache Valley virus. Many humans and animals have antibodies to this virus, but this is the first report of a disease associated with the virus.

A novel coronavirus associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome
Article Abstract:
Researchers report that a previously unknown species of coronavirus causes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). It was found in tissue samples from patients in seven countries. Coronaviruses also cause the common cold, but this strain appears to be more virulent.
