Lipoprotein profiles and serum peroxide levels of aged women consuming palmolein or oleic acid-rich sunflower oil diets
Article Abstract:
The hypercholesterolemic effects of a dietary exchange between palmitic acid and oleic acid while linoleic acid is relatively lower in aged women with initially high serum cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and with high intakes of dietary cholesterol were investigated. Participants were assigned to two consecutive 28-day periods in which they consumed sunflower oil diets rich in palmolein or oleic acid. Results showed that palmolein increased low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and protected low density lipoproteins against peroxidation than did oleic acid.

Nutrient intake and iron status of Australian male vegetarians
Article Abstract:
A semiquantitative food record and serum ferritin and haemoglobin measurements have been used to analyze the iron and zinc intake and iron status of healthy Australian male adult vegetarians. It was established that iron intake of both ovolactovegetarians and vegans were substantially higher than those of omnivores, with all dietary groups showing intakes much greater than the Australian recommended daily intake of 7 mg. Ovolactovegetarians gained dietary iron only from non-haem iron sources, while fruit, cereals and vegetables were the only sources of iron for vegans.

Do beans and oat bran add to the effectiveness of a low-fat diet?
Article Abstract:
Forty free-living hypercholesterolemic men and women participated in a study to determine the effects of consuming an increased amount of soluble fiber in the form of oat bran or beans. Results of the study show that the modified diet did not significantly lower the cholesterol concentrations in the hypercholesterolemic subjects but an increase in the high-density liporpotein-C (HDL-C) and decrease in low-density lipoprotein-C ratio to HDL-C was observed.
