Long-term care looming as huge problem in Medicaid debate
Article Abstract:
Medicaid acts as the de facto national nursing home insurance program for millions of middle-income Americans. Republican leaders in Congress have proposed ending coverage to current recipients and turning over administration of the program to the states who can use block grants to manage Medicaid more efficiently. A consortium of consumer groups called the Long Term Care Campaign is organizing opposition to federal Medicaid cuts arguing that it will eliminate long-term coverage for up to three million people.

Extent of future savings from managed care questioned
Article Abstract:
Managed care may not be the answer to controlling the rising cost of medical care, say many authorities. Only by eliminating expensive procedures can costs be reduced, they claim. Health maintenance organizations (HMOs) do not please all employers, but a Conference Board shows 69% of companies using managed care, compared with 57% in 1989. Some employers prefer to contract directly with health care providers.

Mink-lab attack prompts new research fears
Article Abstract:
The Animal Liberation Front takes credit for destruction of a Michigan State University environmental laboratory that uses minks as research animals.
