Bridging the gap between research and practice: the role of continuing medical education
Article Abstract:
There are many ways of ensuring that physicians incorporate the results of medical research into their practice. This is usually accomplished by continuing education courses, but physicians can also learn from their colleagues. Some physicians adopt new ideas quickly, while others are more conservative. The early adopters can often play a role in convincing their colleagues to try new ideas. Several agencies are also developing clinical practice guidelines to incorporate new research. It may also be possible to design computer programs that prompt doctors to follow a certain treatment plan on specific patients.

East meets West to cure Russia's ills
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association (AMA) is doing its part to help Russia develop a national physicians' association. In Jan, 1997, The AMA hosted 12 physicians from the Russian Medical Association at their headquarters in Chicago and Washington, DC. A competing association, the Association of Physicians of Russia, will send delegates to the AMA's annual meeting in June. The health care system in Russia collapsed after the fall of the Soviet Union and the incidence of disease is rising. The Russian physicians will learn how to develop certification programs and how to lobby on behalf of their patients.
