Loss of body heat following surgical intervention
Article Abstract:
A number of factors can cause patients undergoing surgery to lose body heat and even suffer hypothermia. These include the exposure of the body, rapid air changes in the operating theatre and infusion of cold intravenous fluids. Patients who suffer loss of body heat may experience cardiac dysrhythmias, a decrease in gut intestinal motility or the depression of blood-clotting mechanisms. It is important to identify high-risk patients, including all those undergoing major bowel, vascular and revision hip surgery.

Prepared for a smooth recovery?: post-operative nausea and vomiting can cause life-threatening complications
Article Abstract:
Post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) affects surgical patients and can cause life threatening complications, such as obstruction of the airway. It can also delay receovery and also adds to the pain and discomfort of the patient according to a survey. Patients fearful of surgery are often susceptible to nausea and vomiting, and women are at greater risk of PONV. Nurses are in a position to identify patients at risk of PONV and should spend time providng information and reassurance.

Recognising risk factors. (post-operative nausea and vomiting_
Article Abstract:
Post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) can have serious consequences and can delay recovery. However it can be minimised and even eliminated through good medical management, and effective antiemetic therapy is available. Children between the ages of three and puberty are seen as high risk and women are more likely to suffer than men. Some intravenous induction agents are linked with PONV, although newer agents including propofol are less emetogenic.
