Lyme disease vaccines
Article Abstract:
The approval of two Lyme disease vaccines may cause tremendous demand for the vaccines. The vaccines, LYMErix by SmithKline Beecham and Imulyme by Pasteur Merieux Connaught, were awaiting FDA approval in 1998. They are very effective in producing protective antibodies against the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which causes Lyme disease. However, many people are at low risk of Lyme disease because they do not live in areas where the disease is prevalent. In addition, the infection is easily curable if detected early. The vaccines have not been tested in children, they are expensive, and frequent booster shots may be necessary.

Cost-effectiveness of pneumococcal vaccine for people 50 through 64 years of age
Article Abstract:
Giving the pneumococcal vaccine to some people 50 years old and older can actually save money, according to a computer simulation. African-Americans and smokers have an especially high risk of getting pneumococcal infection, which is a serious bacterial infection. For other low-risk groups, pneumococcal vaccination would cost money, but it is still relatively cheap compared to other preventive services.
