MIT, FDA develop safety monitoring tool
Article Abstract:
The scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge are developing a computer surveillance system that would mine databases from hospitals, health maintenance organizations and federal agencies to help the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) identify early signs of safety problems with prescription drugs and medical devices. The system would supplement the FDA's Adverse Events Reporting System that relies on voluntary reports submitted by doctors or other health care professionals and mandatory reports from companies.
