Magnesium prevents seizure-induced reduction in excitatory amino acid receptor (kainate and alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-isoxazole-4-propionic acid) binding in pregnant rat brain
Article Abstract:
Seizures appear to cause changes in the binding of some excitatory amino acid neurotransmitters in the brain, according to a study in rats. Magnesium prevents these changes, and may protect the brain from seizure-induced damage.

Effect of magnesium sulfate on excitatory amino acid receptors in the rat brain: kainate and alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazole-4-propionic acid receptors
Article Abstract:
Magnesium sulfate appears to be active in regulating kainate receptor sites in the rat brain. The kainate receptors may participate in the excitatory process during convulsions. Groups of six rats were treated with either magnesium sulfate or saline over four hours, one day, or two-week time periods. Brain tissue samples were measured for amino acid binding activity particularly at the kainate binding sites. Kainate receptors were less active with the four-hour and one-day treatment but more active after the two-week treatment.

The effect of magnesium sulfate on fetal heart rate parameters: a randomized, placebo-controlled trial
Article Abstract:
Magnesium sulfate may slow the fetal heart rate, but the effect is very small and may not be serious. Magnesium sulfate is given to pregnant women to prevent premature labor.
