Making sense of ... cataract surgery
Article Abstract:
Cataracts, opacity of the lens of the eye, are easily remedied with surgery in which the lens nucleus is replaced with an intra-ocular lens implant made of Perspex or Perspex-like material. Ageing is the most common of the seven main causes of cataracts. Cataract surgery can take place under local or general anaesthetic and in some areas is performed as day-case surgery. Eyedrops are frequently applied before the operation, while an eye pad and plastic shield to ensure that the patient does not accidentally rub the eye during sleep is applied after the operation.

Making sense of leeches
Article Abstract:
The Hirudo medicinalis medicinal leech is used in hospitals in digit replantation and to remove peri-orbital haematoma. Maxillo-facial surgeons and plastic surgeons use them to overcome venous congestion of muscle flaps and skin. Leeches currently cost 7.50 pounds sterling each, and can be reused. Usually, leeches are used for up to five days. Nursing staff need to explain about use of leeches properly, so that patients have a positive attitude towards them. Use and storage of leeches are also discussed.
