The science of the art of geriatric medicine
Article Abstract:
Several research studies are changing geriatric medicine into a science rather than an art. The diversity of elderly people and their problems has made it difficult to evaluate treatment programs. One 1995 study found that certain clearly identified risk factors increases an elderly person's chance of falling. Eliminating these risk factors greatly reduced the incidence of falls and injury from falls in an elderly population. Another 1995 study found that the incidence of urinary incontinence in elderly nursing home residents could be substantially reduced if they were prompted to go to the bathroom throughout the day. A third study revealed that exercise training could improve elderly people's strength and balance so they would be less likely to fall. Falls are a significant source of disability among elderly people.

Educating Medical Students for Work in Culturally Diverse Societies
Article Abstract:
Most medical schools do not offer courses on cultural sensitivity or racial and ethnic diversity. Researchers identified only 17 such programs, 13 of which were in North America. Only 7 of the programs were part of the required curriculum. Only one program tested the students after they completed the course on cultural diversity.
