Making sense of central venous pressure
Article Abstract:
Measurement of the central venous pressure (CVP) indicates problems with the circulatory system before changes in pulse or blood pressure can be detected. Pressure created by the venous return into the heart is measured by a catheter passed through a vein into the right atrium. Changes in CVP has many indications including heart failure when the reading is increased and dehydration when the CVP reading has decreased. In patients who already have a cardiac condition the use of CVP is limited and therefore alternative investigatory methods will be necessary.

Making sense of central venous catheters
Article Abstract:
Central venous catheters are used to monitor blood pressure in the central veins and to replace fluids. There are three different types which are used in hospitals: long lines, standard length, and silastic catheters. Complications include phlebitis, thrombosis and arterial bleeding. Skin contamination next to the area of insertion can cause infection and removal of the catheter is recommended as soon as possible. This is done asceptically and nurses must ensure that the procedure is carried out correctly. A sidebar article lists possible complications.

Cardiac distress: nurses are in a prime position to recognise psychological problems in patients and, given the appropriate knowledge, can intervene
Article Abstract:
Nurses are in a good position to recognise psychological problems patients may have during or after an illenss. A care study discusses the psychological problems encountered by a patient after a myocardial infarction. It describes how stress and fear of dying are major contributing factors to patient non-compliance.
