Problems relating to the role of senior nurses at West Middlesex University Hospital National Health Service Trust have been addressed by using the 'modern matron' concept. New strategies have included clarifying reporting relationships and changing job titles. Emphasis has been placed on reviewing the skills and experienced needed by ward-based clinical leaders.
