Malpractice premiums in 1992: results of a national survey of dentists
Article Abstract:
High dental malpractice insurance premiums appear to be related to high coverage levels and past claims history. Researchers surveyed 3,048 general dentists to identify factors that affect malpractice insurance premiums. Dentists who had malpractice insurance with a per-incident limit of $1 million or more tended to have significantly higher premiums than practitioners with lower coverage limits. Dentists employed by others had significantly lower premiums than clinicians who owned their practices. Dentists who had past malpractice complaints or formal claims had significantly higher premiums than other dentists. Four tort reforms were associated with lower malpractice premiums and six tort reforms were related to higher premiums. Dental malpractice insurance was less expensive in states with fewer lawyers. State regulations that restricted the role of dental hygienists and limited the number of dental offices per practitioner were associated with higher premiums.

Adoption of innovative caries-control services in dental practice: a survey of Washington State dentists
Article Abstract:
Many dentists in Washington State have not yet accepted the medical model of dental caries. This model states that caries are primarily a result of bacterial infection. It contrasts with the surgical model, which sees caries as lesions that have to be removed. Four characteristics of the medical model include the use of light-cured composites, fluoride varnishes, chlorhexidine rinses and pit-and-fissure sealants. In 1996, almost all the dentists used light-cured composites, but only 30% to 40% used the other methods. Dentists who were part of a network were more likely to adopt the medical model sooner than their colleagues.
