Managing manual handling in clinical situations
Article Abstract:
The occupational health and safety of nurses is often compromised by the need to lift heavy adult patients, with 25% of nurses claiming to suffer back pain because of lifting. The employer is legally required to minimize the risk of injury to staff by providing lifting equipment, while the senior nurse is responsible for overseeing safety management. The Manual Handling Organisation Regulations (MHOR) have been introduced to make the employer more responsible for developing and implementing appropriate safety measures at work.

Learning cues
Article Abstract:
The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, Middlesex, England has introduced the use of cue cars in nursing examinations to emphasise the connection between nursing research and practice. The scheme challenges traditional rote learning in exam preparation. Card preparation develops information retrieval skills. Their use in examination develops skills in selective use of information. The scheme has resulted in less reliance on course notes, more self-directed learning and greater use of library resources.

Implementing manual handling codes of practice
Article Abstract:
Employers of nursing staff are urged to implement load handling and patient handling codes of practice to improve safety in patient transfer. Senior managers or employers are required to co-ordinate policy development under health and safety law. A code of product can be most appropriately developed by those with daily working knowledge of patient handling systems, with senior management best relied upon to confirm the legality of decisions.
