Managing the social and behavioral impact of technology change
Article Abstract:
Designating a nurse specialist as a change manager during major technological transition periods may smooth the staff's transition into using the new technology quickly. This role can be presented to administration as a strategy to prevent a costly system failure. The person in this position could plan the actual needs, train staff members, encourage the behavior changes needed to implement the new system, monitor progress, and make changes as needed.

Creating a true learning organization
Article Abstract:
Nurse managers should help their organizations become learning centers, and this is fostered by good relations with Information Systems departments and Chief Information Officers. With a true learning environment, employees will be motivated by interest instead of fears of failure. This will enable the flexibility needed to adjust to the changing medical workplace, especially as information technology becomes more important in medicine.

State regulation in a world of "boundary-less" technology
Article Abstract:
Nurse managers face increasingly complicated state regulation as their technology crosses political boundaries. For example, telemedicine can put a nurse's presence in another city via phones, faxes, computers or TV. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing has proposed optimal criteria for a regulatory model to facilitate interstate practices.
