March of the midwives
Article Abstract:
The UK government is trying to remedy the 1,000 vacancies for midwives by recruitment initiatives but student midwives point out their low salaries, whilst training, requires them to take part time jobs. Some midwives report students are giving up due to the low pay of 70 pounds sterling per week for those under 26 years. A large number of midwives went to lobby parliament in Oct 1998. They were demanding higher grades for all midwives and parity in pay with other similar occupations. They also took a petition with 90,000 signatures to the prime minister's residence.

Winchester and Endsleigh National Health Service Trust has successfully introduced flexible working hours for nurses. The trust focused on flexible hours in a recruitment campaign to try to attract former nurses who had given up nursing to devote time to their families and new nurses with young families.
