Marching into the mainstream
Article Abstract:
The National Medical Association (NMA), an organization for black doctors founded in 1895, finds itself at the center of the health care debate as reformers adopt the group's long-time goals. The NMA, with a membership of 8,000 of the US's 16,000 black physicians, has long been committed to expanding healthcare access for the underprivileged and increasing the number of black physicians. The NMA's health care reform proposal is outlined, along with infant mortality, heart disease, HIV and other health statistics for African-Americans.

Practice open, but smoking patients need not apply
Article Abstract:
Mark Jameson, a doctor who has a private practice in Hagerstown, MD, has opted to limit his practice to non-smokers because he believes that patients should take some responsibility in doctor-patient efforts to prevent disease. Jameson established the policy in Mar 1993, when he advertised his practice in local newspapers. Some of his colleagues believe that his policy may be too judgmental, but there has been no public criticism. Jameson retained enough popularity in his community to be elected to the city council.
