Medical claims of the future
Article Abstract:
Rep Fortney (Pete) H. Stark proposed reducing paperwork and cutting medical costs by instituting a Medicare billing system comprised of electronic billing, uniform national standards and smart cards. At an Apr 6 hearing before a House Ways and Means Health subcommittee, Stark proposed a system similar to that of the federal reserve. Each citizen would carry an electronic health card. Regional clearinghouses would handle claims, and uniform formats would replace coding, billing and utilization review requirements. Testimony presented at the Stark hearing is discussed.

Educators face likely financial cuts but want to call own shots
Article Abstract:
Medical educators are preparing for unprecedented funding cuts for graduate medical training. The growth of managed care plans, which typically limit the use of teaching hospitals and academic centers to reduce costs, has contributed to the increasing financial difficulties. Academic deans and faculty members are encouraging educators to join the American Medical Association in opposition to excessive federal audits and financial penalties imposed on academic medical institutions.

Panel wants most paper claims to go the way of the dinosaur
Article Abstract:
The Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange forecasts that insurance claims will be processed by electronic data interchange by the mid-1990s. The group, formed at the request of the Department of Health and Human Services, is working on uniform codes and standards for confidentiality of medical records. It is believed that automatic processing of claims can save from $4 billion to $10 billion a year in the cost of medical care.
