Maternal smoking and Down syndrome: the confounding effect of maternal age
Article Abstract:
Researchers conducted a study to evaluate the association between maternal smoking and birth of a Down syndrome child. They used a population-based case-control study of 775 Down syndrome cases, 7,750 normal control, and Washington State birth records of 1984-1994. They found the prevalence of Down syndrome births increased with maternal age. However, among controls, the prevalence of smoking during pregnancy decreased with increasing maternal age. After controlling for maternal age, researchers found no association between maternal smoking and the risk of Down syndrome.

Early and late weight gain following smoking cessation in the lung health study
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine weight gains as a result of smoking cessation in 5,887 male and female smokers between the ages of 35 and 60 years in the US and Canada. The results revealed that men and women who quit smoking gain an average of 10 kg over the five year period. The study showed that more effective early intervention is needed to address smoking cessation and weight control.

Has smoking cessation ceased? Expected trends in the prevalence of smoking in the United States
Article Abstract:
Cigarette smoking from 1965 to 1990 declined among US adults. However, data from the 1990s suggests that smoking initiation is on the rise, which may undo the trend. Researchers in a study used a dynamic forecasting model to show that although the decline may decrease further, the prevalence of smoking will decline over the next several decades.
