Maxillary sinus grafting for totally and partially edentulous patients
Article Abstract:
Maxillary sinus grafting may be an effective treatment for patients without adequate bone for placement of dental implants. A dental implant is a prosthetic device implanted into the oral tissues or within the bone to provide support for a complete or partial denture. Some patients may lose bone after tooth extraction and will not have enough bone to support a dental implant. Maxillary sinus grafting involves grafting bone to the rear maxilla, the irregularly shaped bone that forms the upper jaw. Patients should stop smoking before and after undergoing this procedure. They should undergo a physical examination of the rear maxilla, and an individual treatment plan should be developed. Thirty-two patients missing all or some of their teeth received sinus grafts over a 10-year period. The majority of grafts were successful and most patients were satisfied.

Sinus-lift graft: using the maxillary sinuses to support implants
Article Abstract:
Dentists may perform a sinus-lift graft to build-up the back portion of the upper jaw bone so that it can support dental implants. A graft mixture containing freeze-dried cortical bone, porous non-resorbable hydroxylapatite, and pieces of the patient's jaw bone is packed inside the maxillary sinus. This mixture stimulates bone formation. During this procedure, two to four dental implant bodies are placed in the sinus. Simultaneous placement of the graft and implants avoids the need for two separate surgeries. This minimizes total treatment time and shortens the healing period. Within one year after the bone graft is placed, the patient is fitted with an implant-supported prosthesis. Patients treated with this procedure have maintained stable implant prostheses for more than five years.
